COMMENTS ON UPCOMING LONG BEACH MAYORAL AND CITY COUNCIL ELECTIONS
Long Beach City Councilwoman, Suzie Price, announced on January 10th Mayor and that she will be leaving the Council’s Third District seat open to run in the Long Beach’s mayoral race. Price’s decision came after Ninth District councilman Rex Richardson and former Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske declared their candidacy for the Mayor’s position also. Other candidates who have pulled papers to run for mayor include Deborah Mozer, J. Raul Cedillo, Alan W. Gafford, Joshua Rodriguez, and Franklin Sims. Ms. Price has agreed that although she may seem more conservative than other candidates, she is not to be confused as a minority voice. One of her main concerns includes the division between the City’s wealthier east side and other sectors within the City. Ms. Price may be considered more moderate than conservative and will likely obtain the endorsement of the Long Beach Police Association and of the City’s real estate developers but may struggle to gain any other meaningful support. Organized labor is considered “key” because of oil and gas and port employees most of whom committed to Rex Richardson early on.
Mayoral candidate, Rex Richardson, is likely to secure major endorsements from “key” Long Beach leadership such as Mayor Garcia, Lena Gonzalez, Juan Benitez, and the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor. In 2020 Mr. Richardson was helped by the BizFed trade association and many other business groups when seeking appointment to the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), and he has already reported more than $200,000 in campaign contributions. The Oil and Gas industry, which is a large stakeholder in Long Beach, is committed to Richardson’s campaign which means state and local building trades are likely supporters.
Long Beach City Councilman, Al Austin, has announced that he will run for State Assembly for California’s 6􏰃th 􏰀ssembly 􏰂istrict. The announcement came following current Assemblyman
